A. Intro

Being rigged in a stupid manner, Samsung would have us install all our Java games / software via WAP - thankfully it's possible to use the USB cable that came with the phone.

There's three programs needed for this:

Softick PPP 2.21 (do a quick google search - as it's licenced software I can't host it, although their site has a 30-day free trial available)

Java Uploader (Utility made by Jabberwock, Zipped)

Samsung Easy Studio (and resultant Samsung D600 or D900 drivers - use either the cd that came with the phone or download the software from the Samsung site)

B. Basic Phone setup

1. On your D600-D900, go to Applications / Java World / Options.

2. In the options menu go to network settings and enter the following:

APN: Internet

Username: -leave blank-

Password: -leave blank-

Proxy: OFF

3. Save Settings

C. PC Software installation

1. Install Softick PPP. This is designed for Palm users, so if you receive any error messages (typically "unable to locate USBPORT.dll"), just ignore them.

2. When you get to the configure USB Share mode, choose the exclusive mode.

D. Make the computer talk to the phone

1. Plug up your phone to the PC via the cable.

2. Check you are connected by running Samsung's Easy Studio. If you can't get connected, please switch your phone on and off and try it again (sometimes it is necessary to remove the USB plug). It is important to unload Easy Studio before continuing.

3. Enable Serial Java Download on your phone by entering #*536963#

4. Run Softick PPP (don't activate just yet)

5. Go to 'Settings / Bluetooth / Serial' to check if it has a connection such as \Device\ss_mdm0 (the COM port number will differ per pc, dependant on devices and ports available). If it's there, select it, otherwise exit Softick PPP and go back to step 1. (you may find the proper COM setting from the Windows Device Manager / Modems / Samsung Mobile USB modem)

6. Active Softick PPP. When you activate Softick PPP you may get an error message, similar to part 3 stating that it cannot find file 'x' - just ignore it and select 'cancel'.

E. Installing your Java Games or Software

1. On the phone, enter the Serial Java menu by entering #*5737425# and choose 'PPP UP' then 'USB'. Important : only do this once for each switch on/off otherwise it will simply reset your phone.

2. Run the 'Uploader.exe' program from the PC and add a Java 'jad' file.

3. On the phone, from the Serial Java menu, select 'Serial Download'.

4. The java applet will take a few seconds to copy, with the phone (hopefully) showing a progress bar - annoyingly it then runs the file rather than returning to the menu (meaning you must quit the game/software and re-enter the java menu (going straight to step three of this section)). Important : If you run a firewall on your PC you may have to allow 'Java Uploader' and 'Softick PPP' to access the net before it will send to your phone.

When finished uploading files, go back to your phones main screen and enter the code #*536961# to avoid problems with WAP. (It's important to do this every time your phone crashes and restarts, which is quite likely!)

Troubleshooter

If your phone crashes at any point, try the following:

1. Switch your phone off/on (if it hasn't done this already for you)

2. De-Activate Softick PPP (important).

3. Disconnect the USB cable.

4. Enter the code #*536961# to reset the Java serial download.

5. Go back to section D of this mini-guide.
